Yesterday started off as a not so great day (check out my last blog post) but it has ended in such a magnificent way. After disappointing Isla with the fact that she was indeed not going on a field trip like I thought, the weather turned out to be amazing and warm so we took a trip to the beach. Now this beach is about an eighth of a mile down the road from our house that's being renovated. We live at the seaside, five minutes from the countryside and five minutes from the middle of town. It truly does not get any better.
When we decided to move to Scotland we did so because we wanted a certain lifestyle for our family. We want our kids to be explorers. We want our kids to grow up walking places and not just driving. We want our kids to explore and learn about the world by being in nature. I want to be able to walk down the road to the beach or run in the opposite direction and be in the middle of the countryside or take a walk as a family just to get coffee. I want to take my kids to other countries that we couldn't afford to do had we stayed in the US. I want my children to grow up eating vegetables that are cheaper than the junk food. I want a simpler lifestyle that allows us to focus on the things and people we love and not all of the frustrations of life.
No, the days won't always be sunny (physically and metaphorically). We will have short days where the sun rises at almost 9 in the morning and sets at 3:30 in the afternoon. We will have rainy days. We will have gusty days. Some days we will hardly see the sun. But it's ok. It's all ok.
Today we spent the afternoon on the beach. We collected sea glass and polished stones. We watched the waves crash and swell. We ran. We jumped on each other's shadows. We explored. We were quiet. We felt the breeze around us while watching the birds play, the ships in the distance and the storm clouds roll in. We were covered in sand. We moved to live a certain life and so far our dreams are coming true. I want to look out my window and see the world before. I want to breathe fresh air (and sometimes manure). I want to walk for miles and know that I am the only person standing in this spot and that the nearest person could be a mile or more away.
And I want this for my kids.
